Working at Siggraph 1999
Route 66.6 was an interactive installation created by Magritte's Cow consisting of six interactive landscapes which make up route 66.6, the 'world' outside the Millenium Motel. Visitors could get behind the wheel of a specially modified '64 Cadillac Belair and explore 3D worlds on a 60' x 20' screen rear projected from 3 distinct and synchronized computers.
The 3-screen projection was driven by Houdini on 3 Intergraphs, with input via MIDI from many 'instruments'.

The experience allowed for an immersive and playful navigation through multiple linked futuristic interactive worlds

Magritte's Cow was 2 people. I created most of the Houldini logic and modeled all the scenes as parametric midi drivable components.
ETech approached us 7 weeks before the show to create this piece. They said we needed to use Houdini, as the software had been donated. Neither of us knew anything about Houdini. Needless to say, we did very little sleeping.
From our efforts, Houdini released a new version of their software that optimized for realtime applications, and shortly thereafter created a new product, Touch101, and company. Derivative Inc. specialized the Houdini engine specifically for the purpose of realtime midi driven performance art.
